As you are probably aware, we are planning a weekend photography club trip to Tory Island.

The dates of the club involvement will be Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2009 – but people can arrive and leave over a longer period if they wish.

As there is a variety of accommodation available – hotel, apartments, B&B, hostels and even camping, we are leaving it up to members to book their own accommodation to suit their requirements.

Details of the fast ferry, accommodation and other information on Tory can be found at;

http://www.toryislandferry.com/index.htm

I have already booked my accommodation at the hotel (I have stayed there a number of times and can recommend it) – they are doing a deal;

2 nights B&B plus return ferry crossing from Magheroarty for Euro 120 per person
1 nights B&B plus return ferry crossing from Magheroarty for Euro 75 per person

Their ferry departs Magheroarty at 11:00 and 18:00   Coming home on Sunday, their ferry departs Tory at 10:00 and 17:00

This is a fast ferry, taking just over 30 minutes (depends on weather etc.)   There is another ferry company which runs a slow ferry

In good weather Tory is the most beautiful place – dramatic high cliffs with all sorts of sea birds and assorted sea wild life along the north and east coasts, a lighthouse on the west coast with a couple of lakes with various water birds along the south coast. Sunrises and Sunsets can be stunning.   It’s about 2 miles long and about 0.75 of a mile wide – no need for a car, but you can hire bicycles if you want to – I would recommend walking. You must take care along the cliffs – one slip and there’s nothing to stop you except the rocks 100 feet below.

Lots of interesting things and places to photograph.   Restaurant and pub in the hotel, a chip shop type restaurant about 150 yards from the hotel with a drinking club just beyond that.

Shorts Camera Club Quiz Night on Monday 25th May.

John Belshaw, who was judging us a couple of weeks ago, has organised this. Teams of 6 – I would like to think that we could have at least two teams from Strabane. Can anyone interested either respond to this e-mail and/or tell Gerry Cassidy tomorrow night (I won’t be there) so we can organise transport.

Club AGM 2009

That time of year is fast approaching again – we’ll be having the AGM on Tuesday 16th June. This is everyone’s opportunity to know the mechanics of your club and also to stand for any of the 5 club positions (Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary and two committee members). Any such nominations must be in writing with a proposer and seconder (both club members) and must be with the secretary on or before Tuesday 2nd June 2009.

On the recent bus trip a few of us were talking about the club having a weekend away and Tory Island was suggested as a good option.

There are two ferry companies offering the crossing – one (run by the owner of the hotel) takes about 30 mins, the other one is closer to an hour.

Details of the fast ferry and other information on Tory can be found at;   http://www.toryislandferry.com/index.htm

In good weather Tory is the most beautiful place – dramatic high cliffs with all sorts of sea birds and assorted sea wild life along the north and east coasts, a lighthouse on the west coast with a couple of lakes with various water birds along the south coast. Lots of interesting things and places to photograph.   Restaurant and pub in the hotel, a chip shop type restaurant about 150 yards from the hotel with a drinking club just beyond that.

Before doing a lot of work on this, I would ask;
1.       How many people interested?
2.       You want to bring partners/children/friends too?
3.       Do you want to sort out your own accommodation (as you’ll see on website - choice of hotel, B&B and hostel)?
4.       Over a weekend or during the week?
5.       What dates?
Regards
John Campbell

A day trip to Glenarm, Co Antrim is being organised for Sunday 10th May.
No firm details yet, but probably leave Strabane about 09:00 and back home again about 20:00.
Unable to give prices either as this depends on numbers – the more that come, the bigger the bus and the bigger the bus, the cheaper it should be for everyone.   Last year the bus cost something like £12 a head.   There is a restaurant at the park and if you wish you can have a meal there – but at your own cost! Gerry is trying to do a deal with the restaurant.

We need to know numbers asap, so can you either respond to this message or tell us at the next meeting.

We had a great night at Enniskillen last night, saw some interesting images and met some great people.

To be honest, we thought we were robbed on a couple of themes (as did the people sitting around us from Enniskillen and Ballyshannon), but it was a fun night so we shouldn’t take it too seriously – but we (Strabane) will be hosting the event in 2010 and we’ll want to win it then!

Landscape – Ollie Kelly – 2nd with 4 points
Portrait – Stanley Mathers – 3rd with 3 points
Sport – Raymond McCarron – 3rd with 3 points
Still Life – Frances Doherty – 3rd with 3 points
People – Jim Devlin – 2nd with 4 points
Wildlife – John Campbell – 2nd with 4 points
Squares - Jim Cunningham – 1st with 5 points
Macro – Victor Quigley – 1st with 5 points
Movement – Gerry Cassidy – 3rd with 3 points
Mono – Pat Dunne – 2nd with 4 points

Total points – 38

Enniskillen won with 44 points whilst Strabane and Ballyshannon were equal second on 38 points each.

Well done to everyone who had entered.

After a hard fought battle tonight, we have our 10 entries for the 3 way competition between ourselves, Enniskillen
and Ballyshannon on Thursday 5th February at 20:00.

The Strabane selection is;

Landscape – Ollie Kelly
Portrait – Stanley Mathers
Sport – Raymond McCarron
Still Life – Frances Doherty
People – Jim Devlin
Wildlife – John Campbell
Squares - Jim Cunningham
Macro – Victor Quigley
Movement – Gerry Cassidy
Mono – Pat Dunne

We need all these entries to be mounted 16” x 12” (off white is recommended but the choice is up to the author) and
brought to the meeting on Tuesday 3rd February to be put together.

We would also like at the very least these 10 people plus as many supporters as possible to come along on the night.

Wildlife

In order to get maximum participation, the rule is one member, one print – i.e. if you are chosen to represent
Strabane for Landscape then that will be your only entry – so you can’t also be Strabane’s Macro, for example.

But this doesn’t meant that you can’t enter all the themes (or as many as you like) in the Strabane knock out!

We will hold the Strabane knock out at our club meeting on Tuesday 27th January 2009.

This means we will have 10 members representing Strabane, 10 from Enniskillen and 10 from Ballyshannon.

The actual competition will be held on Thursday 5th February 2009 at the Ardowen Theatre, Enniskillen starting at 20:00.

Day Trip to the Glens of Antrim on Sunday 1st June

We have now got some quotes from coach hire companies.

The cost depends on numbers going and seems to vary from about £16 to about £10 a head – obviously,
the more people that go, the cheaper it will be.

We now quickly need numbers and get the correct size of coach booked.

Can you respond via e-mail and/or tell us on Tuesday night if you are interested in coming? We will then probably
look for a deposit the following week.

Strabane and District Camera Club Exhibition in the Alley May 2008

You may have seen the ‘Alley Events Guide Summer 2008’ – on page 3 there is (at the top of the page) the exhibition of Strabane and District Camera Club.

The blurb says “ The Alley welcomes a truly exceptional collection of photographs taken across Strabane and surrounding district. Major themes include the wonderful characters we see every day in our towns and villages, beautiful landscapes, dramatic events and simple nature in progress.”

Someone from the Alley did this write-up. All we have to do is match it!

The main points are;

1.
Hanging will take place during week 5th – 9th May
2.
Exhibition will take place from Monday 12th May – Sunday 8th June
3.
There will be 80 prints exhibited
4.
John Campbell to provide all the images together in TIFF format on maximum of 3 CDs to Adrian
5.
John Campbell to provide a JPEG of each photographer along with a short description of each image (title/date/location)
6.
Launch night – actual date to be confirmed, probably to coincide with an event at the Alley rather than on its own

Due to the number of spaces (80 prints will be hung) each member can submit up to 3 entries – but note - not all entries may be hung.

Each entry should be named as the photographers name (all lowercase, no spaces, no full stops, no punctuation) followed by 1, 2 or 3 – e.g. johncampbell1.tif, michaelmcgonigle2.tif, yvonnemcconnell3.tif etc.

You must prioritise your own prints – 1 having the highest priority. All 1’s will be hung, all 2’s will be hung and we will probably have to select a number of 3’s (hence not all 3’s may be hung) to make the numbers up to the 80 prints.

TIFF format – if people are unable to convert to TIFF, submit to me as highest quality JPEG (prints will be made at A3 size, poor quality will be noticed) and I’ll convert to TIFF.

I would prefer submissions on a CD – clearly marked with your name and number of entries included.

2nd choice would be a memory stick, again clearly marked with your name

As far as I know, I will be at the club meetings on 1st, 8th and 22nd April (I’m away for the 15th April meeting) – hence the 22nd April meeting is the absolute closing date – if not handed to me on that night, too late! I would prefer people not to wait until the 22nd April – please get your entries in early.

Once I get the TIFFs to Adrian, he will arrange printing – no cost to members.

Sale of prints  - All the prints will be offered for sale by the Alley.
If you don’t wish your print to be sold, please don’t enter it. The proceeds for the sales (after deducting the Alley’s commission) will be donated to charities – this will benefit (1) the club – publicity and wider recognition, (2) the Alley – good sales, they get commission and will want us back if popular with improved attendance at Opening Night with wealthy charity patrons invited who can afford to buy prints!, (3) the charities – extra money for their good causes. The likely charities will be Marie Curie Cancer and Save The Children.

We are suggesting a price of £20 per print, although some may be higher – we’ll sort this out during the hanging week.

Any queries, let me know asap.

Start time for club meetings

We held a committee meeting last week and discussed the starting time issue. We agree that 7pm is too early for many people whilst an 8pm start can mean a late finish! We agreed to a trial that from our first meeting after the Easter break (that will be Tuesday 1st April) we will start our weekly meetings at 7:30pm. We will run this until we break up for the summer break and review then.

Easter Break

No meetings on 18th and 25th March because of the holidays – next meeting on Tuesday, 1st April starting at 7:30pm. Enjoy the break!

Club Competitions

 The next themes are;

‘Q is for….(noun)’ and ‘Open’ to be submitted Tuesday, 1st April.

‘Macro’ and ‘Open’ to be submitted Tuesday, 29th April.

 Judging

On Tuesday, 8th April, we welcome Sarah Fyffe from Sarah Fyffe Photography in Omagh to judge our ‘Q is for….(noun)’ and ‘Open’ entries

 Lecture

Tonight we welcome Paul McCambridge who will be giving his ‘Photojournalism’ lecture.

Next month we will have Stanley Matchett giving a lecture and demonstration on portrait photography on Tuesday 15th April.

 Day Trip

 NIPA Exhibition

The Grand Opening is at Belfast Waterfront Hall on Monday 3rd March at 19:30. Peter Wilkin has asked for a strong attendance from all clubs to support the event. John Campbell will be attending, he is happy to take up to 4 members in his car – leaving Strabane around 5:30pm. Contact John via 0774 384 4155 or cjc785@btinternet.com if you would like to come.

 NIPA Round 4 (Sport) results

Just got these, they are now up on the website. We are shown as 18th with 197 points – however I don’t think that these points are correct, I believe that we should have 278 points which would make us overall 17th, just one point ahead of NI Electricity Camera Club. I have asked NIPA for clarification.

This makes it really important that we have a full entry for Round 5. Noel can confirm tonight, but we need 4 colour, 4 monochrome and 4 slides. I have 4 slides ready – so if we don’t make the numbers tonight, can people drop in prints at John Campbell’s home.

Our lack of points for slides hasn’t done us any favours over the year. However I have discovered a site which will transfer digital images to slides for £3 each - http://www.digitalslides.co.uk/ I got 4 slides done for Round 4 which gained us 26 points (unfortunately having no monochrome entries dropped us points anyway!). I have also got 4 slides made up for Round 5. For next year, maybe some members would like to consider entering some slides?

Focus On Ireland is very pleased to announce that they are being joined world-renowned photographer Les McLean for a three days of workshops.

Les will present his very popular Street Photography Workshop, which will be centred around the St. Patrick's Festival in Dublin.
Probably Les’ most popular workshop, “Street Photography” will take the participants on to the streets of a Dublin during the St. Patrick’s Day Festival to make photographs of people. As Les himself says, “the key to the success of Street Photography is the ability to communicate with people and to anticipate what they are going to do.”

The objects of the workshop are to help build the participant’s confidence in engaging strangers in conversations that pave the way to gaining the trust of the subject, and to demonstrate a number of methods Les uses in the making of candid photographs.

In The Street Photography workshop either film based or digital cameras can be used.

In addition to the Street Photography workshop, we will also be visiting some locations in Wicklow to photograph
the breathtaking colours and scenery of early spring under Les’ expert guidance.

Following this Les will demonstrate matte cutting and will finish the day with digital printing. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a master of photography,
for individual and small group based instruction and discussion.

The days are sure, not only to be very instructive, but to be full of fun and laughter.

An outline of the workshop:
Sun 16
th March: Les will lead an outing to two shooting locations in Wicklow, (Enniskerry Village and Powerscourt Gardens). This will be followed by a talk by Les introducing Street Photography in preparation for the following day’s outing to Dublin and the St.Patrick’s Day Festival.
Mon 17
th March: The Street Photography workshop will start as we leave Bray with Les to travel to Dublin City Centre for the St.Patrick’s Day Festival. After shooting in Dublin we will return to Bray for an informal chat about our day’s photography.
Tues 18
th March: The day will start with an outing to Glendalough to visit the ancient monastic site and lakes with Les. We will start early to avoid the crowds and to catch the early morning light. Returning to Bray in the afternoon for Les’ digital printing/imaging workshop where participants will have the opportunity to print a photograph with Les. This could be one taken during the workshop or participants can bring work with them in digital format.
